Fear of missing out-FOMO

Are You Suffering from FOMO?

Rs 25 lakh per month.

That is what I recently saw a content creator earning. And my immediate reaction was:

“If someone of my age can do this, why cannot I?”

For a moment, it did not feel like inspiration. It felt like pressure. Like I was falling behind.

That is when I realized this was not ambition. This was FOMO.

The Illusion of “Everyone Is Ahead”

Today, we are constantly exposed to success stories. Social media makes it look like:

  • Everyone is earning more
  • Everyone is growing faster

But here is the truth: we are only seeing the highlight reel, not the full journey.

Research has also shown that increased social media exposure often leads to higher levels of comparison and anxiety. What we see online is usually filtered success, not the struggles behind it.

What We Often Forget

When we see a successful content creator, we think:

“They are just making videos and earning money.”

But we ignore:

  1. Years of effort behind the scenes
  2. Failures that no one talks about
  3. Skills built slowly over time
  4. Success is rarely instant

And even if someone gets overnight success, very few are able to sustain it.

A Better Way to Look at Success

Instead of comparing outcomes, I started breaking success into three parts.

1. Time Investment

How long has this person been working on their craft?

The creator I mentioned had 10+ years of experience in the same field before her content started generating significant income. What we see today is the result of years of consistent effort.

2. Support System

Success is rarely built alone.

Think about:

  • Family support
  • Friends and network
  • Exposure and opportunities (colleges, education, experience)

These factors create an environment where growth becomes possible. Not everyone starts from the same place.

3. Individual Effort

This is the most crucial factor.

It includes sacrifices and risks the person has taken. The rule is simple: go off from the crowd.

This does not mean isolating yourself. It means doing something different with focus and discipline.

If we are doing the same things every day (scrolling reels, staying in comfort, avoiding effort), we should not expect different results.

This is the part we all know but do not always follow:

  • Showing up consistently
  • Improving every day
  • Staying patient when results are slow
  • Believing in your path
  • Learning from mistakes and staying committed

Reality Check

A very small percentage of people stay consistent long enough to see results. Many people start, but very few continue when it gets difficult.

That is the real difference.

The Shift That Changed My Thinking

Instead of asking:

“Why am I not there yet?”

I started asking:

“Am I doing what it takes to get there?”

Because success is not random. It follows a process, and that process requires patience.

Final Thought

I am not saying do not dream big. You absolutely should.

But do not let someone else’s timeline make you feel late.

Some people start early. Some start late. And many who start late still achieve incredible success.

I remember a friend once said:

“I may not be successful immediately, but I will be successful eventually.”

And that stayed with me.

Takeaway

Next time you feel FOMO:

  • Do not just look at where someone is
  • Look at what it took to get there
  • Focus on your journey
  • Stay consistent
  • Trust your process

Because you are not behind. You are on your own timeline.
